1972 Mercedes Benz 280s Automatic
Put on your Sunday best. The Mercedes-Benz W108 was the car you, your parents or grandparents used (or wished they could have used) for all those special occasions. A car that meant you’d arrived. A car that was cherished. A car that, thanks to the almost impossible combination of luxury, practicality, style and performance became that heirloom used by generations for family holidays, weddings and Sunday outings.
To meet changing fashion requirements the arrival of the W108 Merc at the ’65 Frankfurt Auto Show in 1965 saw the toning down of brightwork and American-inspired fintails. However this didn’t detract from the saloons luxury status though. It looked contemporary, was sleeker and featured a more open and spacious interior – achieved by means of a lower body waist line, 60mm lower ride and increased glass area.Initially the model line-up included a 250 S, 250 SE, and 300 SE but in late ’67 the 250 units were replaced by the latest 2.8-litre lump and badged as 280 S (carburettor) and 280 SE (fuel-injection). In this guise performance improved significantly with the twin carb 280 S good for 140hp (100kW) and a zero to 100km/h time of 12.5 seconds. Top speed was claimed at a stonking 185km/h in manual and 180 for the auto.
Over a period of 7 years 364 699 W108s were built with just 93 666 of those being in 280 S guise like the car you see here today. This particular 1972 car is fitted with the bulletproof automatic gearbox and has had its paint and interior refreshed in its correct cream with tan combination. Period-looking seatbelts have been fitted throughout the cabin, making it the ideal family classic.
